What is CDM?

The Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015 (CDM) is a mandatory set of regulations governing construction-related projects within the UK. These regulations apply to both domestic and commercial construction projects. This means that if you’re a homeowner commissioning structural or renovation work, you must comply with the CDM regulations, much like you would with commercial projects.

What is a CDM Principal Designer?

The duty holder role of the Principal Designer was introduced in the 2015 CDM regulations to plan, manage, monitor and coordinate health and safety throughout the pre-construction phase.

The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) stipulates that the Principal Designer, whether an individual or organisation, should have the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience (or organisational capacity if a business) to manage health and safety during the pre-construction phase.
