When is The Right Time to Engage the Principal Designer?
The truth is, you need to make the appointment of a Principal Designer as soon as the project is given the go-ahead. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM) gives advice on the appointments.
The appointment can either be made direct by the client or on the client’s behalf. Making an early or timely appointment also ensures Principal Designers have the time to gather all required information for the project. They will use this to build several very important controls including ongoing survey for ecology, geology and other important governance points such as unexploded ordnance, overhead and underground service surveys, as well as traffic management plans including routes of delivery and removal where sensitive areas and villages are concerned.
What Does the Design Risk Analysis Do?
The Design Risk Analysis (DRA) process is invaluable to the wider CDM governance and risk management process for the project. The DRA process involves the Principal Designer working with the Architects, Designers and other Engineers to identify risks brought about by the projects design, ensuring that these are tracked and mitigated wherever possible, enabling the project to be undertaken safely and with these risks being effectively managed.
Do I need a Project Health and Safety Advisor for Enabling Works?
Yes! The appointment of a Project Health and Safety Advisor (whether full time or visiting) should always be achieved for the enabling works on projects. Remembering that these works are the very early stages of the project. Efficient, safe and well managed projects invariably start well, which is due majorly to setting good health and safety standards at the beginning of the project, especially during the enabling works.
Are Welfare Facilities Different for Solar PV Projects?
The fundamental principles of welfare provision do not change between Solar/PV projects and any other construction project. However, the positioning and ease of access for effective welfare facilities by Solar PV installation teams and contractors will dictate where these facilities are sited. Remembering that many large Solar/PV projects are remote in their siting, as well as spreading for hectares (hundreds, in some cases), it is vital that all site personnel can access proportionate welfare facilities effectively, sometimes a good distance from the main site compound.
