What is CDM?

CDM Construction

CDM refers to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 which is the most recent set of regulations that UK domestic and commercial building Health and Safety projects must adhere to. Compliance with CDM regulations is mandatory whether you are a homeowner commissioning a domestic self-build project, or are representing an organisation working on multi-site commercial or public sector projects.

What is a CDM Principal Designer?

The CDM introduced the duty holder role of ‘Principal Designer’ in 2015. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) states that a Principal Designer is the appointed individual or company that is responsible for overseeing and managing the pre-construction phase of any project involving at least one building contractor.

The Principal Designer (whether an individual or organisation) must exhibit the appropriate, relevant skills, knowledge and experience (and, if a company, the organisational capability) to fulfil all duties of this relevant duty holder position.
